The
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Chicago Lying-In
Hospital are part of the health center complex at the University
of Chicago. All of the subdisciplines of obstetrics and gynecology
are represented within the Department including:
- family planning
- general obstetrics and gynecology
- genetics
- gynecologic
oncology
- maternal-fetal
medicine
- reproductive
endocrinology and infertility
- ultrasound
urogynecology
Our
faculty also collaborate with physicians in other subspecialities, including anesthesia, pediatrics, general
medicine, pathology, oncology, and endocrinology. Our academic
faculty are based full-time at the University of Chicago and,
therefore, have close working relationships with the residents.
At least one member of the obstetrics and gynecology faculty is
in the hospital to supervise the residents at all times.
While
many graduates enter subspecialty fellowships at the end of their
residency, others go into clinical practice in both academic and
private practice settings. The residency training program is designed
to prepare the individual for any career in obstetrics and gynecology
Inpatient
Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Chicago Lying-In Hospital occupies the second and third floors
of Bernard Mitchell Hospital. The facilities include the following:
- 6
perinatal acute care beds
- 8
labor rooms
- 3
delivery rooms
- 2
birthing rooms
- 38
postpartum and antepartum beds
- 38
crib nursery
- 17
bed gynecology unit
- 4
obstetric operating rooms
All
labor and delivery rooms are equipped with central fetal monitoring,
ultrasound, and laboratory access. Immediately adjacent to the
obstetrical area is the neonatal unit consisting of the intermediate
and intensive care nurseries. A close relationship exists with
the neonatal section of the Department of Pediatrics for the management
of critically ill infants. At the University of Chicago Hospitals,
there are approximately 3,200 babies delivered annually, many
to women with high risk pregnancies.
The
University of Chicago Hospitals has been designated as an Illinois
Perinatal Center to provide consultation to community physicians
through obstetrical and neonatal hot lines and to receive transported
women experiencing high risk pregnancies and critically ill infants.
The faculty and resources of the Department are structured to
meet these responsibilities.
All
of the outpatient clinics are located in the Center for Advanced
Medicine (CAM). Clinics include resident continuity, general obstetrics/gynecology,
oncology, and specialty clinics in chemotherapy,
colposcopy, diethylstilbestrol (DES), family planning, high risk obstetrics, HIV,
genetics, medical high risk, reproductive endocrinology and infertility,
vulvar dermatology, ultrasound, and urogynecology. All outpatient procedures including
operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are done in the CAM outpatient
operating rooms.
Additional
Rotations at MacNeal Hospital
Integrated within the University of Chicago Health System is MacNeal
Hospital, a 427-bed private hospital located in Berwyn, Illinois.
The major emphasis of this affiliation is to further our experience
in gynecologic surgery, ambulatory care, and for the residents
to experience health care delivery in a community based system.
The University of Chicago has an academic director of obstetrics
and gynecology who resides full-time at MacNeal Hospital for administration
of the training program. |
