The
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology accepts candidates
into its four-year training program immediately following
graduation from medical school. The program is approved
by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education for
four years of graduate medical education upon completion
of medical school. Training can also be arranged for those
who have completed internships (Housestaff I) in Medicine
or Surgery. Eligibility for the American Board of Obstetrics
and Gynecology (ABOG) is achieved upon completion of the
four-year accredited training program.
Residents
and Faculty
Numerous opportunities exist for residents to develop working
relationships with the faculty including the following:
Daily: service rounds with the attendings.
Weekly: grand rounds, oncology-pathology conference,
endocrine-infertility conference, obstetrical complications
conference, gynecologic complications conference, resident
lecture series.
Monthly: journal club.
Each resident is assigned to a faculty preceptor. Faculty
evaluate residents on each rotation and conduct semi-annual
resident evaluation sessions. There is a special resident/faculty
committee that meets regularly to consider issues important
to the residency-training program. There is a monthly housestaff
meeting with the program director and assistant residency
director.
Research
Project
Prior to graduation, each resident is required to complete
a research project on an area of interest to him/her. Research
opportunities are available in all sections of the Department,
and a faculty member sponsors each project. Residents present
their projects at the end of the PGY 3 year. Most of the
residents also present their projects later at national
meetings and/or publish them in peer-review journals.
