Specialists in the Section of Gynecologic Oncology are working to discover novel methods of detecting and treating ovarian, cervical, and uterine/endometrial cancer. Our gynecologic oncologists are part of a multidisciplinary team including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, clinical nurse specialists, and social workers. The team develops individualized treatment alternatives which the physician discusses with the patient and her family. We offer state of the art surgical techniques that include laparoscopic and robotic surgery for cancer. (see recent press release) Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of therapies, including those consistent with the preservation of fertility for women in their reproductive years.
For over half a century, the University of Chicago has been a national leader in cancer research and treatment and has made significant contributions in understanding and treating gynecologic malignancies. Our program is a member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, a national organization devoted to developing new and effective therapies for gynecologic tumors. As a research center, we offer more treatment options including newer therapies which may not be available at other hospitals.
