In 1976, the state of Illinois implemented a statewide-regionalized perinatal program. Ten networks, each with an administrative center, were identified. Six networks are in the Chicago metropolitan area and four are located throughout the rest of the state. The perinatal program is dependent on Maternal Child Health Block Grants from the state and matched funds from the federal government. The Illinois Department of Public Health is the lead agency that administers the regionalization program by providing direction and financial support. The University of Chicago Perinatal Network, one of Illinois' ten regionalized networks, extends north to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and south to Kankakee. Within the University of Chicago Perinatal Network, there are 23,000 to 24,000 deliveries per year - more than 10% of all deliveries in the state.
